FAQs

View our frequently asked questions below!

- Are the tortoise hampers suitable for my tortoise?

Yes! All parts of the leaves and flowers included in our tortoise hampers are safe to feed to all tortoise species. Whether your tortoise is a Testudo or a Mediterranean... Or something in-between! Our hampers are designed with all common and exotic tortoise species' appetites in mind!

- What weeds and flowers are in your tortoise hampers?

All leaves and flowers included in our hampers are edible for tortoises and include:

Plantain, Dandelion, Pansy, Clover, Geranium, African violet, Viola, Sedum album, Sedum reflexum, Aster, Broadleaf filaree, Lamb's lettuce and Carex spider plant.

Flower and Weed amount, sizes and parts used may vary due to seasonal availability.

We advise that any unknown leaves and flowers you find, you don't feed to your tortoise until you have identified it. All leaves and flowers we use have been checked to be edible for tortoises. Please check out our blogs on the plants we use and we recommend the Tortoise Table Plant Database to identify plants you are unsure of!

- How best to store the hampers in the fridge and how long do they keep?

Once your hamper as arrived store all included packets in the vegetable drawer of your fridge ASAP. Open the sealed packets only when you decide to feed your tortoise and check to make sure the quality of the leaves and flowers is good. We wash the leaves prior to dispatch, so you can simply unpack and feed! (We recommend a light dusting of calcium powder to help bone growth).

- How do you decide what leaves and flowers go in orders and how much?

We'll always try to include a minimum variety of at least 3 different plants in our tortoise hamper packets. Each packet will weigh a minimum of 20g once filled with seasonal leaves and/or flowers that we have picked / grown in the Staffordshire countryside.

Flower heads and out-of-season plants in limited supply will normally be prioritised to our subscribers at no extra cost as a thank you from us! We are always working to improve our production and efficiency regarding the picking and packing of our orders and so thank you for your understanding and support!

- How do I track my order?

All of our orders will be dispatched with "Royal Mail 24hr Tracked" next day delivery labels. On the occasion that this service is unavailable alternative couriers may be used. When an order is fulfilled an email containing your order's corresponding tracking number will be included to track on the courier's website. Otherwise our website chat services can provide you with your tracking number or simply reach out to us and we can send it to you!

- What do I do if I never received my order or it was defective?

If the your order doesn't arrive or is defective please contact us on our website or send an email to LeafyLunches@gmail.com. We advise that you specify a "safe place" for the courier to leave your parcel, as if the order is missed it may be returned to the dispatch centre for re-delivery / pickup. Otherwise we can offer a full refund or replacement for defective or missed orders.

- Is the amount and type of leaves and flowers in the tortoise hamper packets intended to satisfy a common tortoise's appetite and nutritional intake for the day?

Yes! The daily portion packets included in our hampers are intended to satisfy a baby to adult tortoise's appetite and diet. However, no tortoise is the same. Therefore more, less or different leaves and flowers may be required (see our answer to custom/bulk order requests below).

- I'm ordering more than 1 hamper, can you combine orders into the same box to save on postage?

Yes! All orders will be combined into the same box to minimalize material waste and postage costs where possible. However a maximum of 20 daily packets can fit inside our 12x9x8 inch boxes.

- Can you do custom or large/bulk orders?

Yes! Please reach out to us with ways we can improve or customise our products to better satisfy you (and your tortoise's) needs!

- Do you sell during the winter period?

Yes! While our stock will be affected by the increased demand and slower growth of plants during the winter period we will always prioritise subscriptions and re-list our products as soon as we have stock.

- Where are you located and where do you grow and pick from?

Leafy Lunches is a family owned business based in North Staffordshire. All of the leaves and flowers used are grown and picked in North Staffordshire Flower Gardens and Fields!

- Who is the tortoise in the pictures?

Say hello to Sid! Our family tortoise and Leafy Lunches' no.1 taste tester. He is a 12 year old (as of 2022) Horsfield (Russian) Tortoise adopted from the RSPCA in 2015. We have had him for over 8 years now and he is still growing strong! It's thanks to Sid that we got the idea to start picking more of the same food we gave to him to feed other hungry tortoises just like him!
